Mu Guiying

The well-known classical novel "Generals of the Yang Family", is a compilation of stories about heroic events in the life of Mu Guiying of the Song Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.). Mu Guiying was a charismatic leader with unsurpassing bravery and intelligence.

Mu was the leader of a Shandong bandit clan. She was also well-trained in the art of war, riding and archery. During combat against the Song army, she succeeded in capturing their general, Yang Zhongbao three times. She later fell in love with him, and after their marriage, she left her clan to join the Song army. She led the Song troops from victory to victory and masterminded the defeat of the formerly dreaded "Tianmen Army Formation" of the Liao army.

Yang Zongbao died in the battle against the Xixia invaders. The Song army suffered greatly from the short age of commanders. Yang Zongbao grandmother, She Taijun, at the age of one hundred, was appointed as the supreme commander. She led the twelve widows of the Yang family to fight against invaders. Mu Guiying, by then was fifty years old. She volunteered to infiltrate deep into the enemy territory and her army ultimately emerged victorious.
